Teaching to Learn, Learning to Teach

Teaching to Learn, Learning to Teach

$47.95

This text, designed as a handbook for preservice and beginning teachers, is organized to address broad topics in secondary school teaching rather than the needs of specific subject areas. While examples are included from specific subject disciplines, the focus is on the relationships among them (concepts, skills, practices). Preservice teachers in secondary school general methods classes and student teaching seminars are frequently preoccupied with two problems—classroom control and figuring out exactly what is the role of the teacher. These problems are compounded by methods texts that compartmentalize different aspects of teaching (theory, practice, critical analysis). Teaching to Learn, Learning to Teach: A Handbook for Secondary School Teachers provides an alternative. • Although different approaches to secondary teaching are included, a model student-centered approach is offered that provides a series of PRO/CLASS Practices for designing lessons, developing personal connections with students, and building classroom communities. (The acronym stands for Planning, Relationships, Organization, Community, Leadership, Assessment, Support, Struggle.) • The broad principles of PRO/CLASS Practice are presented as part of an integrated approach to teaching — not as a recipe to be followed mechanically. Preservice teachers are encouraged to reinterpret the principles and continually redefine them as they develop their own reflective practice. • A variety of pedagogical features and activities are integrated throughout the text, including sample Nuts and Boltsteaching techniques (lesson and unit design, activities, questions, projects, team learning, community building) that can be used in different types of classrooms and by teachers employing different pedagogical approaches; conversations with preservice teachers; interviews and

She suggests ways to strengthen our children’s self control; and thereby, empower them to raise their own level of self-esteem. She uses examples and vignettes to assist parent. She outlines useful problem-solving techniques, and provides realistic expectations. Communication and tolerance are at the core of Mrs. Miller’s approach. Excerpt: Winchester College – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Winchester College was founded in 1382 by William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester and Chancellor to both Edward III and Richard II, and the first seventy poor scholars entered the school in 1394. It was founded in conjunction with New College, Oxford, for which it was designed to act as a feeder: the buildings of both colleges were designed by master mason William Wynford. This double foundation was the model for Eton College and King’s College, Cambridge some 50 years later (a sod of earth and a number of scholars from Winchester were sent to Eton for its foundation), and for Westminster School, Christ Church, Oxford and Trinity College, Cambridge in Tudor times. In addition to the seventy scholars and 16 “Quiristers” (choristers), the statutes provided for ten “noble Commoners”. These Commoners (“Commoners in Collegio”) were paying guests of the Headmaster or Second Master in his official apartments in College. Other paying pupils (“Commoners extra Collegium”), either guests of one of the Masters in his private house or living in lodgings in town, grew in numbers till the late 18th century, when they were all required to live in “Old Commoners” and town boarding was banned. In the 19th century this was replaced by “New Commoners”, and the numbers fluctuated between 70 and 130: the new building was compared unfavourably to a workhouse, and as it was built over an underground stream, epidemics of typhus and malaria were common. In the late 1850s four boarding houses were planned (but only three built, namely A, B and C), to be headed by housemasters: the plan, since dropped, was to increase the number of scholars to 100 so that there would be “College”, “Commoners” and “Houses” consisting … More:

The arrival, and continuing evolution, of high quality 3D objects has been made possible by recent progress in 3D graphics rendering. With this increasing quality comes a corresponding increase in the size and complexity of the data files and the necessity for advances in compression techniques. Effective indexing to facilitate the retrieval of the 3D data is then required to efficiently store, search and recapture the objects that have been compressed. The application of 3D images in fields such as communications, medicine and the military also calls for copyright protection, or watermarking, to secure the data for transmission.Written by expert contributors, this timely text bring together the three important and complementary topics of compression, retrieval and watermarking techniques for 3D objects. 3D object processing applications are developing rapidly and this book tackles the challenges and opportunities presented, focusing on the secure transmission, sharing and searching of 3D objects on networks, and includes:an introduction to the commonly used 3D representation schemes; the characteristics, advantages and limitations of polygonal meshes, surface based models and volumetric models;3D compression techniques; the 3D coding and decoding schemes for reducing the size of 3D data to reduce transmission time and minimize distortion;state of the art responses to the intrinsic challenges of building a 3D-model search engine, considering view-based, structural and full-3D approaches;watermarking techniques for ensuring intellectual property protection and content security without altering the visual quality of the 3D object.3D Object Processing: Compression, Indexing and Watermarking is an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers working in signal and image processing, computer aided design, animation and imaging systems. 9/11 Synthetic Terror: Made in USA

9/11 Synthetic Terror: Made in USA

$7.23

The thesis of Webster Tarpley’s 9/11 Synthetic Terror: Made in USA has been enthusiastically received with its working model of the 9/11 plot: a rogue network of moles, patsies, and a commando cell in the privatized intelligence services, backed by corrupt political and corporate media elites. This new, fifth edition adds a significant new dimension. Tarpley’s documentation of a plethora of 9/11 drills may prove as revolutionary as the thesis of controlled demolition – perhaps even more so. Many people have not been able to see that 9/11 was a false flag. They may seem immune to physical facts like the free-fall speed of the towers, as they take refuge in a lack of engineering qualifications. No math skills are needed to grasp the more familiar, common-sense fact that an act that is rehearsed is also staged. Moreover, understanding how drills are essential to conduit such operations helps us recognize many types of false flags, such as the London bombings, and not only building collapses. Finally, wider public awareness of the dangers and workings of drills could help prevent terror operations, by making them too difficult to carry out with impunity.

A Company of Citizens: What the World’s First Democracy Teaches Leaders about Creating Great Organizations

$1.99

The “knowledge revolution” is widely accepted, but strategic leaders now talk of the logical next step: the human capital revolution and the need to manage knowledgeable people in an entirely different way. The organization of the future must be not only nimble and flexible but also self-governing and values-driven. But what will this future organization look like? And how will it be led? In this thoughtful book, organizational expert Brook Manville and Princeton classics professor Josiah Ober suggest that the model for building the future organization may lie deep in the past. The authors argue that ancient Athenian democracy was an ingenious solution to organizing human capital through the practice of citizenship. That ancient solution holds profound lessons for today’s forward-thinking managers: They must reconceive today’s “employees” as “citizens.” Through this provocative case study of innovation and excellence lasting two hundred years, Manville and Ober describe a surprising democratic organization that empowered tens of thousands of individuals to work together for both noble purpose and hard-edged performance. Their book offers timeless guiding principles for organizing and leading a self-governing enterprise. A unique and compelling think piece, A Company of Citizens will change the way managers envision the leadership, values, and structure of tomorrow’s people-centered organizations. Author Biography: Brook Manville is Chief Learning Officer of Saba Software, a firm specializing in human capital development and management solutions. Josiah Ober is David Magie Professor of Classics at Princeton University.

A Derivational Approach to Syntactic Relations

A fundamental concept in all syntactic theories is that of a syntactic relation between syntactic objects. While recent work in the Minimalist Framework has attempted to explain the nature of syntactic objects in terms of simple and conceptually necessary assumptions regarding the language faculty, the relations that hold between syntactic objects has not been similarly explored. The authors initiate such an exploration and argue that certain fundamental relations such as c-command, dominance, and checking relations can be explained within a derivational approach to structure-building.This approach has significant consequences concerning the architecture of the syntactic component. Semantic and phonological interpretation need not operate upon the output phrase-structure representation created by the syntactic derivation. Interpretation is more readily computed derivationally, by interpreting the steps of a derivation, rather than the single output structure created by it. The result is a new and controversial level-free model of the syntactic component of the human language faculty. This topical and timely Minimalist analysis will interest professional and theoretical linguists, syntacticians, and anyone interested in contemporary approaches to syntactic theory.

$18.53

It was 1964. The job was to turn a dusty field into a top-ranking medical school. There were no buildings, no faculty, and no funds. Merlin K. DuVal accepted the challenge and won strong support as he began building the University of Arizona’s first College of Medicine.Starting his adult life as a model in New York in the 1940s DuVal climbed his way up to being appointed Assistant Secretary of Health during Nixon’s administration and finally being instrumental in the founding of the University of Arizona’s medical school. While DuVal was a public man with a long list of accomplishments, this is also a deeply personal account in which a high-powered doctor discovers that his children grew up without really knowing him.A year before his death, Dr. DuVal worked with journalist Linda Valdez to tell his story, and the real delight of this book is reading along as this man of remarkable intellectual curiosity examines his own life, his profession, and our society.

 A Gift Of Dreams

A Gift Of Dreams

$1.37

Did you ever build a model airplane that would really fly, or know someone else who did, or maybe wish, much later, that you had dared to try? In the fifties, when I was growing up, all the boys tried to make them, but you weren’t supposed to take any of that very seriously. I did, and in spite of being laughed at and even bullied, I refused to give up. One day I discovered that a few dedicated people had actually built radio controlled airplanes. Talking about that got me laughed at even more, so what else could I do but promise myself that by the end of my senior year in high school I would build one of my own and make it fly? A Gift of Dreams is a classic American coming-of-age tale cast well outside the ordinary mold, a memoir with roots deep in the intensity of youthful experience. It invites the reader to share my challenge of making a remote controlled vehicle fly in the days when even NASA had trouble doing it, while still trying to act like a normal teenager worried about working at the town drugstore, getting into college, handling the joys and perils of young love and emerging sexuality, all in the unique context of society in a New England seacoast village. Today, thoughtful readers everywhere are looking for optimistic, engaging storytelling that endorses positive values, and they will find it here. A Gift of Dreams is about a lot more than building model airplanes that will fly…it is about finding the courage in daring to be different.

A Journey Through the Systems Landscape

A Journey Through the Systems Landscape

$25.5

Systems are everywhere and affect us daily in our private and professional lives. We all use the word “system” to describe something that is essential but often abstract, complex and even mysterious. However, learning to utilize system concepts as first class objects as well as methodologies for systems thinking and systems engineering provides a basis for removing the mystery and moving towards mastery even for complex systems. This journey through the Systems Landscape has been developed to promote learning to “think” and “act” in terms of systems. A unique aspect is the introduction of concrete system semantics provided as a “system survival kit” and based upon a limited number of concepts and principles as well as a mental model called the system-coupling diagram. This discipline independent presentation assists individuals and is essential for building a learning organization that can utilize a systems approach to achieving its enterprise goals. The eight chapters are presented as stops along a journey that successively build system knowledge. Each chapter terminates with a Knowledge Verification section that provides questions and exercises for individuals and groups. Case studies reflecting the utilization of the system related concepts, principles and methodologies are provided as chapter interludes.

A New Framework for Building Participation in the Arts

A New Framework for Building Participation in the Arts

$9.95

Arts organizations across the country are actively expanding their efforts to increase public participation in their programs. This report presents the findings of a RAND study sponsored by the Wallace-Reader’s Digest Funds that looks at the process by which individuals become involved in the arts and attempts to identify ways in which arts institutions can most effectively influence this process. The report presents a behavioral model that identifies the main factors influencing individual decisions about the arts, based on site visits to institutions that have been particularly successful in attracting participants to their programs and in-depth interviews with the directors of more than 100 institutions that have received grants from the Wallace-Reader’s Digest Funds and the Knight Foundation to encourage greater involvement in the arts. The model and a set of guidelines to help institutions approach the task of participation building constitute a framework that can assist in devising participation-building approaches that fit with an institution’s overall purpose and mission, its available resources, and the community environment in which it operates—in other words, a framework that will enable arts institutions to take an integrative approach to building participation in the arts.

A New Model of School Discipline: Engaging Students and Preventing Behavior Problems

$18.13

Mounting evidence shows that zero-tolerance policies, suspensions, and restrictive security policies fail to improve school safety and student behaviors, and are linked with increased risk of dropping out. Minority students are suspended at disproportionate rates, and over a million cases of corporal punishment are reported each year. Against this dismal backdrop, David Dupper presents a transformative new model of school discipline that is preventive, proactive, and relationship-based. Unlike traditional punitive and exclusionary practices, the model developed in this Workshop volume focuses on enhancing students’ connection to school through building relationships and bolstering social skills. Drawing on the latest research about what works, and what doesn’t, this highly practical guide catalogs an array of proven and promising practices designed to engage, instead of exclude, students. Rather than illustrate a one-size-fits-all approach, it guides practitioners and administrators in identifying their school’s unique needs and selecting appropriate strategies for use at the universal, targeted, and remedial levels. A five-step strategic planning model helps schools transition toward a holistic, relationship-based approach to discipline.Boxes, bullets, evidence summaries, and practice tips make this an accessible, forward-thinking resource for school personnel seeking to engage students and reduce behavior problems in the most effective, pragmatic, and cost-efficient manner possible.

$19.95

A Century Foundation BookIn A New New Deal, the labor movement leaders Amy B. Dean and David B. Reynolds offer a bold new plan to revitalize American labor activism and build a sense of common purpose between labor and community organizations. Dean and Reynolds demonstrate how alliances organized at the regional level are the most effective tool to build a voice for working people in the workplace, community, and halls of government. The authors draw on their own successes to offer in-depth, contemporary case studies of effective labor-community coalitions. They also outline a concrete strategy for building power at the regional level. This pioneering model presents the regional building blocks for national change. A diverse audience-both within the labor movement and among its allies-will welcome this clear, detailed, and inspiring presentation of regional power-building tactics, which include deep coalition-building, leadership development, policy research, and aggressive political action.A New New Deal explores successful coalitions forged in Los Angeles, Boston, Denver, San Jose, New Haven, and Atlanta toward goals such as universal health insurance for children and sensible redevelopment efforts that benefit workers as well as businesses. The authors view partnerships between labor and grassroots organizations as a mutually beneficial strategy based on shared goals, resulting in a broadened membership base and increased organizational capacity. They make the innovative argument that the labor movement can steward both industry and community and make manifest the ways in which workplace battles are not the parochial concerns of isolated workers, but a fundamental struggle for America’s future. Drawing on historical parallels, the authors illustrate how long-term collaborations between labor and community organizations are sowing the seeds of a new New Deal.

A Parallel Algorithm Synthesis Procedure for High-Performance Computer Architecture

A Parallel Algorithm Synthesis Procedure for High-Performance Computer Architecture

$175

Despite five decades of research, parallel computing remains an exotic, frontier technology on the fringes of mainstream computing. Its much-heralded triumph over sequential computing has yet to materialize. This is in spite of the fact that the processing needs of many signal processing applications continue to eclipse the capabilities of sequential computing. The culprit is largely the software development environment. Fundamental shortcomings in the development environment of many parallel computer architectures thwart the adoption of parallel computing. Foremost, parallel computing has no unifying model to accurately predict the execution time of algorithms on parallel architectures. Cost and scarce programming resources prohibit deploying multiple algorithms and partitioning strategies in an attempt to find the fastest solution. As a consequence, algorithm design is largely an intuitive art form dominated by practitioners who specialize in a particular computer architecture. This, coupled with the fact that parallel computer architectures rarely last more than a couple of years, makes for a complex and challenging design environment. To navigate this environment, algorithm designers need a road map, a detailed procedure they can use to efficiently develop high performance, portable parallel algorithms. The focus of this book is to draw such a road map. The Parallel Algorithm Synthesis Procedure can be used to design reusable building blocks of adaptable, scalable software modules from which high performance signal processing applications can be constructed. The hallmark of the procedure is a semi-systematic process for introducing parameters to control the partitioning and scheduling of computation and communication. This facilitates the tailoring of software modules to exploit different configurations of multiple processors, multiple floating-point units, and hierarchical memories. To showcase the efficacy of this procedure, the book presents three case

Each of the 118 surviving churches and meetinghouses from Monmouth County’s early history is portrayed in this richly-illustrated guide, with special attention to their founding, construction and architectural style. This is a substantial reference work—a comprehensive interpretive history of all the 18th and 19th century religious structures in the county. Why churches look the way they do is often explained in terms of regionalism, liturgical requirements, denominational or national traditions, the availability of building materials and/or local construction practices, the affluence of the congregation, and the influence of a fine model. All of those reasons can be pointed to at various times and places in New Jersey; none is more important than any other in general, but any may be the decisive factor for a specific church. This volume will allow readers to look anew at the architectural traditions of Monmouth, providing information for curious congregation members and historians alike.
